Various members from such organizations as the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the National Center on Sleep Disorder Research, and the National Sleep Foundation, gathered for a roundtable discussion focused on the effects of shift work.
Led by Charles A. Czeisler, PhD, MD, FRCP, “Shift Work and Sleep: Optimizing Health, Safety, and Performance,” details the many issues plaguing shift workers and solutions that companies can employ to assist their associates. The publication is a written version of the information covered during the roundtable. Some of the highlights include the increased likelihood of night shift workers to experience serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic disturbances, and cancer. Additionally, the full version examines the effect shift work has on workers’ circadian rhythm alignments and tools for diagnosis and prevention.
