American Nurses Association Focus on Reducing Fatigue

New recommendations from the American Nurses Association aim to reduce risks related to nurse fatigue and patient safety. These recommendations include capping shifts to 12 hours or fewer, reducing hours in a work week to 40 hours or fewer, eliminating required overtime and providing sleep rooms or transportation home when nurses are too tired to drive. Studies have shown that fatigue results in errors, risk-taking and declines in short-term memory.
